ad:tech and eMarketing Association conferences - San Francisco in 2006 The eMarketing Association conference held April 24-26 at the Crowne Plaza in San Francisco was one of the most informative events I have attended in some time. Presentations were given by some of the top executives in the e-commerce space, including the keynote address by S. Gaylord Murray, Vice-President of Brand Marketing for Yahoo!. The audience was comprised of many of the top marketing executives for some of the largest brands in e-commerce. Murray included information in his presentation concerning new media technology being placed in control of the consumer. He expressed the need for brands to invest in new technology marketing exploration. Many of the presenters had information relative to consumers being in control of the many context-based sites that are now showing heightened popularity with consumer traffic. As examples he mentioned such sites as Myspace.com, Youtube.com, etc., which gives consumers the ability to control their environment as well as interact and become part of that community. Community marketing logic and consumer brand outreach is something that was emphasized during the presentation of MSNBC.com President Charlie Tillinghast. His keynote address concerning new media branding techniques centered on content vs. context, appealing to consumer emotion and community marketing platforms online. Interactive consumer controlled engagements are top traffic generators. Tillinghast also pointed out that managing a company’s brand through these community portals is a concern. It is up to e-marketers, he said, to ensure brand control. Tillinghast also pointed out that broadband reach is soaring. Ipods, cell phones and game consoles are all within the new mobile media categories. Consumers are controlling their televisions with Tivo and DVR, which means they are skipping through the commercials and receiving advertising-free TV. Reaching consumers who are in control of their experiences with mobile media in both offline and online channels can be challenging. It may be necessary to ensure that some type of reward-driven opportunity exists, which might enhance the applications for marketers to reach these consumers. Greg Stuart, CEO of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, expressed concern about a statistic that says e-commerce retailers lose more than $96 billion a year to wasted advertising online. Stuart said that marketers need a specific, targeted approach when reaching out to consumers. He also said it is imperative that retailers not lose sight of what they consider valuable, relative to event triggers on their sites. Event values can be placed, not only on immediate ROI, but also on repeat visitors, e-mail sign-up rates and other brand marketing endeavors. Stuart said it is important for all traffic and web site events to be monitored and scrutinized through the use of metric software This will ensure that event values are factored into a brand’s overall success. Stuart's breakdown concerning suggested marketing budget allocation for e-retailers is as follows: 70 percent To what you know works Quantifying a formula for your company’s events and monitoring sales through a direct relation to these events can assist your company in measuring your brand’s effectiveness. How much value do you place on an e-mail sign-up? Or when a consumer refers your site to a friend? Companies should ensure successful measurements of all brand engagements or web site triggered events in order to evaluate brand marketing efforts. The eMarketing Association event also included an incredible welcoming reception sponsored by Yahoo.com. Yahoo-tinis were handed out freely on top of the Crowne Plaza overlooking downtown San Francisco. It was a fabulous event, and we all had the privilege of discussing e- marketing trends with the President and CEO of the eMarketing Association, Robert Fleming. Video and impactive consumer acquisition I am still speechless about ad:tech 2006 in San Francisco when it comes to the amount of new media information that was shared. I will tell you this: Start researching this new technology because it is here. Consumers are ready. Are you? One of the highlights of the show was the focus on video.Video is hot and now. Controlling it is another story. At the bottom of this article I have included a list of "must see" companies who will assist you in the practical application of video, which may increase your brand exposure and your consumer reach. Video is engaging, and viral videos were the buzz of the show. Many large brands are interested in capturing a youth audience using this new medium. Taking the video to the audience is the secret sauce of many e-commerce and ad media companies at this event. Youutube.com and some of the more enlightening videos that are showcased on the site was a hot topic of discussion concerning the application of video online. ROVION, the company that creates inPerson TM videos, showcased a case study using video technology for The Miss America Pageant on TVGuide.com. The inPerson TM video featured Deirdre Downs (Miss America 2005). The spot welcomed visitors to the site and explained that by clicking on her image, the consumer would be transported to CMT.com to learn more about all of this year’s contestants. The Affiliate Summit 2006 was an incredible success, with over 13 of the PartnerCentric Inc team in attendance including the President of PartnerCentric Inc Linda Woods. The PartnerCentric Inc booth had a fantastic turnout with much of the interest stemming not only from the newly created marketing services division of PartnerCentric Inc or the centric team approach to affiliate management but also to one of PartnerCentric’s newest affiliate program Wynn Las Vegas. Many also enjoyed the spacious wide open patio that looked over the expansive Wynn Las Vegas Golf course, as well the 4 or more open bars were constantly being engaged with many a happy party guest. The highlight for me was when Linda Woods President of PartnerCentric Inc enticed the Pepperjam Management team to a dance off competition. The winners of the dance off have not yet been determined!
